Smith has reason to smile Bangladesh won the toss, elected to bat and posted 93 against South Africa in their ICC Champions Trophy match in Birmingham.
Javed Omar and Mohammad Ashraful opened the batting for Bangladesh, after skipper Rajin Saleh surprised many by opting to bat first in overcast conditions.
Bangladesh got off to a terrible start when the experienced Ashraful was caught behind by Jacques Kallis, off seamer Charl Langeveldt, for four. The second and third wickets fell in hurry thereafter and were both picked up by Langeveldt. The latter trapped Javed Omar plumb lbw and then had skipper Saleh caught at first slip for a duck.
The key to Langeveldt's success was a good length and remarkable away-swing, which defeated all the batsmen who faced him.
The fourth wicket fell with the score on twenty, when Aftab Ahmed tried to pull a short delivery from Shaun Pollock. Ahmed could only get a fine edge off his glove to Mark Boucher behind the stumps.
Nafis Iqbal looked very good in the middle, despite this being only his third ODI, and was able to play some delightful strokes. He top-scored for Bangladesh with an aggressive 40 off only 59 deliveries. Iqbal eventually tried one too many attacking strokes off Nicky Boje, got a leading edge and Herschelle Gibbs ran under the ball at cover.
Manjural Islam Rana joined Khaled Mashud in the middle, with Bangladesh in serious trouble on 63 for five. Islam Rana was unable to build the much needed partnership and was clean bowled by Nicky Boje for just a single. The next two Bangladeshi wickets fell with the score on 72 when Makhaya Ntini got both Mohammad Rafique and Mushfiqur Rahman to edge off to gully. Nicky Boje took both the catches.
Tapash Baisya arrived at the middle to join Khaled Mashud with 27 overs remaining in the innings. Baisya was unable to build a partnership with Mashud and he too found himself falling victim to a Ntini away-swinger.
The 16-year-old Nazmul Hossain joined Mashud in the middle, with the score on 80 for nine. The pair took the score through to 93, before Mashud top-edged a sweep off Boje and Graeme Smith caught him at short fine-leg. Mashud departed for 24 and Bangladesh were all out for 93.
As one might expect in such a low-scoring match, all the South African bowling figures looked good. Langeveldt returned 3/17 in 7 overs, Ntini 3/19 in 9 overs and Boje 3/23 in 6.3 overs.
