 |
Klusener grabs four South Africa got off to a great start in reply to Kenyas 140 all out in a Group B match in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, reaching 38/0 off eight overs. The players went off the field for a short lunch break with 103 runs still required. Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten set about chasing down the moderate score, with the former particularly aggressive in reaching 21 from only 22 balls faced. Kirsten had reached 15 by the break.
Earlier, the hosts endured a miserable day in the field but still managed to dismiss the Kenyans inside 39 overs.
After a below par display in the loss to the West Indies on Sunday, the bowlers showed a great improvement, with Lance Klusener the best of the lot in picking up 4/16 off his eight overs.
Captain Shaun Pollock was just as good with 2/15 off his six-over opening spell, while Makhaya Ntini picked up the last wicket to finish with 1/14 off seven.
But four dropped catches two by Mark Boucher, who also missed a stumping will be of concern as they approach a must-win game against New Zealand in Johannesburg this weekend.
However, against minnows Kenya it hardly mattered as the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals.
Only Ravindu Shah and Thomas Odoyo to a lesser extent managed to hang around, although both were the beneficiaries of dropped catches early in their innings.
Kenya got off to a very poor start when Kennedy Otieno was run out for one after a mix-up with Shah in the second over. Gibbs made no mistake with the direct hit from cover.
Brijal Patel, sent in to up the rate, didnt last too long either as he managed to nick a straight-forward catch to Boucher of captain Shaun Pollock having scored only one.
Kenya slumped to 26/3 when star batsman Steve Tikolo, who has a good record against the South Africans, hit out to Gary Kirsten at mid-on of Pollock for three.
Jacques Kallis came into the attack but was well below his best as he got clubbed for 23 off his three overs.
Boje came on in his place and immediately got in on the act when he had Hitesh Modi caught at short fine-leg by Pollock for nine, while Shah was eventually dismissed for a well-played 60 when he was run out by a great throw from Lance Klusener.
Kenya lost their last five wickets for only 35 runs as Zulu got in on the act with the ball.
Former captain Maurice Odumbe went with the score on 105 when he lofted the ball to Gibbs at mid-wicket, before Collins Obuya went first ball when he was trapped plumb in front.
Martin Suji went 15 runs later when he fended a Klusener bouncer to Pollock at leg-gully, and Peter Ongondo blasted a brisk 13 before he holed out to Kirsten on the long-on boundary off the Natalian.
The hard-hitting Thomas Odoyo was the last man to go when he skied Makhaya Ntini to Boucher, who finally managed to hold on to a catch.
