Edwards shows fire and pace England posted 298/6 and trail the West Indies by 97 runs, at lunch on the fourth day of the third Test at Old Trafford.
Graham Thorpe and Matthew Hoggard resumed on Sunday morning on 89 and three respectively, with England on 233/5 overnight.
The visitors took the new ball as soon as it became available, in only the second over of the day.
Fidel Edwards made the England pair work hard to keep their teeth, let alone score, with a spell of remarkably hostile bowling. The 22-year-old generated speeds well in excess of 90 mph, as he head hunted the batsmen.
Thorpe ironically looked more troubled than Hoggard. The former was cracked on the hand (which was protecting his face) and then blitzed on the temple in two consecutive deliveries, as Edwards went flat out for the jugular.
Corey Collymore was more sedate, but was unlucky not to get the edge with several missed strokes from the rattled England pair.
Hoggard fought bravely, seeing off the shine on the new ball. After facing 78 deliveries and scoring 23 runs, he did at last get an edge. Ramnaresh Sarwan juggled the catch, but held on in the end, to reduce England to 283/6.
Pedro Collins bowled for the first time in the match on Sunday and, soon after Hoggard's dismissal, found the outside edge of Thorpe's bat. It was a regulation slip catch straight to Sarwan, but the West Indies vice-captain made a terrible hash of the attempt and dropped Thorpe for the second time.
As a result, Thorpe made it to lunch on 109 (the 15th century of his Test career) and Geraint Jones on four. Dwayne Bravo had the best figures, with 3/41 from 20, while Collymore weighed in with 2/66 from 26.
